Barclays Investment Banking

Challenge

  • New IT Infrastructure
  • Desktop refresh
  • Migration of 30,000 users
  • Highly Available infrastructure
  • Load Balanced Data Centres
  • Centralised management

Barclays has two business clusters: Global Retail Banking and Corporate & Investment Banking and Wealth Management – both comprising world-class businesses and brands.

Virtual Tech was engaged to work together with SQS and Getronics to deliver Barclays’ £200 million desktop service migration project for 30,000 users. Virtual Tech assisted with the provisioning and defect testing of pre-production and production environments.

The environments were hosted by VMware ESX servers running across HP enclosures / blades connected to EMC SAN storage and a Cisco network infrastructure. The environment consisted of three Active Directory Forests Exchange, SQL, DFS, Thin Print clusters, Citrix load balanced farms, Blackberry, Microsoft Operations Manager, Business Desktop Deployment, Systems Management Server and Pointsec. Hosted and balanced between two financial grade (ISO27001) Data Centers.

As acceptance criteria for the new environment, Barclays required the design and implementation of a disaster recovery platform. This constituted in the coordination and collaboration of Subject Matter Experts (SME) to ensure a successful design, invocation and revocation. Operational, functional and user acceptance testing were undertaken and signed off by Barclays.
